The records of early settler Rupert Fenby of Mission Beach create a mental picture of a reclusive man who valued the flora and fauna. He did what he could to protect it in his life and largely lived off the land. Fenby’s Gap, located on the winding road from Mission Beach to El Arish, is a well-known landmark. This is the man the gap was named after.

The Berry-Porter family history provides Mission Beach with unique living links to some of its earliest European settlers. Bill (William) and Dick (Richard) Porter first selected land here in 1901, 16 years after the Cuttens arrived to stay in 1885.

If Mission Beach has any past residents who could be considered celebrities, the Cuttens would come closest. Maybe Dunk’s famous author, the Beachcomber, Edmund Banfield, or our incredibly successful Reef activist, John Busst, would be known more widely in their time, yet locally the Cutten family are icons. Their story is one of our most important.

George Webb of Mission Beach was a farmer and a soldier; a man of few words who was actively involved in three major wars, the Boer War in South Africa in 1902, WWI in France in 1916 - 1917 and in WWII with the Citizen Military Force in Victoria, 1942 - 1943.
